Description

Creamy chicken mushroom stroganoff brings Russian culinary comfort to modern kitchens with rich, tangy flavors. Hearty ingredients blend seamlessly, offering you a delightful meal that satisfies both hunger and soul.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 8 ounces (226 grams) cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2/3 cup (160 ml) chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) full-fat sour cream

Seasoning and Spices:

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup (30 grams) flour (for dredging)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Cooking Fats and Aromatics:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare chicken by seasoning with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Coat each piece lightly in flour, removing excess.
  2. Heat olive oil in a deep skillet at medium-high temperature. Cook chicken in batches for approximately 3 minutes per side until golden and internal temperature reaches 165°F. Add additional oil if pan becomes dry. Transfer cooked chicken to a separate plate.
  3. Use the same skillet and melt butter. Add sliced mushrooms and chopped onions. Sauté for 6-8 minutes, allowing liquid to evaporate and mushrooms to develop a rich golden color.
  4. Incorporate Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and minced garlic. Cook for 1 minute until aromatic and flavors intensify.
  5. Pour chicken broth into the skillet, carefully scraping browned bits from pan bottom. Return chicken pieces to the skillet, simmering for 2 minutes while occasionally stirring.
  6. Reduce heat and gently fold in sour cream until sauce becomes smooth and creamy. Warm through for approximately 1 minute, avoiding boiling to prevent sauce separation. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper as desired.

Notes

  • Gluten-Free Adaptation: Replace wheat flour with cornstarch or gluten-free flour blend when dredging chicken to make the dish suitable for those with gluten sensitivities.
  • Mushroom Maximization: Select fresh cremini or shiitake mushrooms for deeper, richer umami flavor that elevates the overall taste profile of the stroganoff.
  • Temperature Control: Keep heat low when adding sour cream to prevent separation and maintain a silky, creamy texture throughout the sauce.
  • Protein Flexibility: Swap chicken with turkey, beef, or plant-based alternatives like tofu or seitan for diverse dietary preferences without compromising the classic stroganoff essence.
