Description
Hearty Philly cheesesteak casserole brings classic Philadelphia sandwich flavors to a comforting baked dish. Melted cheese, tender beef, and caramelized peppers create a satisfying meal you’ll crave again and again.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 large sweet onion (sliced)
- 1 large green bell pepper (sliced)
- 11 slices provolone cheese
- 2 cups Bisquick mix
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 0.87 oz package brown gravy mix
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly coat a 9×13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
- Whisk together Bisquick mix, milk, egg, and half the black pepper in a mixing bowl until smooth, then spread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and brown the ground beef for 5-7 minutes, breaking it into crumbles.
- Add sliced onions and green bell peppers to the beef, sautéing for an additional 5-7 minutes until vegetables soften. Drain excess grease.
- Stir brown gravy mix, water, and remaining black pepper into the beef mixture, simmering for 3-5 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Distribute the beef and vegetable mixture uniformly over the Bisquick base, then layer provolone cheese slices across the top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cheese turns golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the Bisquick layer comes out clean. Cover with foil if cheese browns too quickly.
- Allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes before serving to help it set and cool slightly.
Notes
- Customize the meat by swapping ground beef with shredded chicken or plant-based crumbles for a versatile protein option.
- Reduce sodium content by selecting low-sodium brown gravy mix and using reduced-fat cheese slices.
- Enhance vegetable nutrition by adding extra bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach to boost overall nutrient profile.
- Create a gluten-free version by substituting Bisquick with a gluten-free baking mix and ensuring all other ingredients are gluten-free certified.
