Description
Hearty Salisbury Steak and Potato Skillet delivers a classic American comfort meal brimming with savory flavors. Home cooks can easily craft this satisfying one-pan dinner that brings warmth and richness to the table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (premium)
- 4–6 medium Yukon Gold potatoes
- 1 white onion (halved and sliced)
- 3 cups beef broth
- 2 tbsps extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 tbsps tomato ketchup
- 4 tsps Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tbsps cornstarch
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp dried thyme
- Kosher salt (to taste)
- Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Blend ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl. Form four uniform patties approximately 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown patties on both sides until caramelized, then transfer to a separate plate.
- Prepare potatoes by piercing multiple times with a fork. Microwave for 5 minutes to expedite cooking process. Once cooled, chop potatoes into 1 1/2-inch chunks.
- Sauté onions in the same skillet for 5 minutes, seasoning with salt and pepper until translucent and soft.
- Add potato chunks and beef broth to skillet. Simmer for 5 minutes until potatoes become tender.
- Whisk remaining beef broth, tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, dried thyme, and cornstarch in a separate bowl. Pour mixture into skillet, stirring continuously until sauce thickens.
- Reduce heat to low. Return patties to skillet, warming thoroughly until completely cooked. Adjust gravy seasoning with salt and pepper. Serve immediately while hot.
Notes
- Select lean ground beef with a fat content around 85/15 for juicier, more flavorful patties without excessive greasiness.
- Gently mix meat ingredients to prevent overworking, which can create tough Salisbury steak textures.
- Press a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent bulging during cooking, ensuring even thickness.
- Use a meat thermometer to check internal temperature reaches 160°F for safe consumption without overcooking.
- Microwave potatoes partially to reduce overall skillet cooking time and create tender, evenly cooked potato pieces.
- Consider substituting cornstarch with arrowroot or flour for gluten-free gravy variations.
- Add fresh herbs like parsley or thyme for enhanced flavor complexity and visual appeal.
